The formula for replacement fluid for continuous renal replacement therapy

Detail

The formula for replacement fluid for continuous renal replacement therapy is a customized trisodium citrate replacement fluid, used as an anticoagulant during Continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH). The aim is to reduce filter and circuit clotting, minimize blood loss trapped in the circuit during CVVH, and serve as both an anticoagulant and a buffering solution to correct acidosis. This customized citrate-based anticoagulant replacement fluid comprises trisodium citrate mixed with sterile saline and sodium chloride solution. It is used as replacement fluid before the entire filtration process during CVVH.

Technology strengths

It is a citrate-based anticoagulant (RCA) replacement fluid, customized by mixing 30% w/v trisodium citrate, which is readily available as it is commonly used in blood banks.

It can be easily mixed bedside by a skilled nurse.

The customized trisodium citrate replacement fluid is also cheaper compared to commercial citrate anticoagulation solutions.
